6 inches x 9 1/4 in., half-title; engraved frontispiece portrait of Sir Kenelm Digby, after the Vandyck painting (Saunders & Otley, Feb. 1828), with engraved signature; title-page; Preface; Introduction: Life of Sir Kenelm Digby (by Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas); Private Key to the Memoirs; lxxxviii, pp. [1]-328 + [4]pp. publisher's catalogue. Purple textured cloth spine and sides, with a mounted, printed paper title label on the spine, and gray paper over boards. The title label and cloth spine show fading and wear, with a split to the outer front hinge, causing some separation, bumping and wear to the cover corners and edges, general wear and dusting, age-related tanning to endpapers, prelims., book edges. This is an early publisher's binding with the printed price on the title label, inserted catalogue, and untrimmed (but opened) pages; lacking the separate volume of "castrations". This copy bears the engraved, heraldic bookplate Henry Digby Best [? Best, later: Beste; 1768-1836] (Bennett, engraver, Southampton; motto: Soli Deo Gloria); under and partly covering this is a later, engraved heraldic bookplate of J. E. B. Mayor (motto: Mea Anchora Christus). On the facing endpaper is this ink inscription: From his Father Kenelm Digby Beste 12th Aug 1856 (? Kenelm Digby Beste; 1835-1914).
