1848 INDIANS 1st ed George Catlin on Native Americans Sioux Illustrated Swedish Originally published in 1841, George Catlin s Letters and Notes on American Indians covers the lives, customs, hunting cultures, and societies of Plains Indians. Catlin, a painter and author, was the first white man to depict these Indians in their native territories, whilst on his travels to the American West. This 1848 first Swedish edition of American Indian s was published Stockholm and features 21 full-page engravings depicting scenes of Indian culture and customs, bear hunts, Indian battles, and much more! These illustrations were published as a collection later following the success and popularity of this work. According to Wagner-Camp, Catlin illustrated his book with line-cut reductions of his original paintings, and in the text described his adventurous years among the Indians. He recorded his observations of ceremonies, dances, hunting methods, forms of warfare, and the ways of daily living among the major tribes of the high plains and the Rocky Mountains .
