Descripción
[16] pp., 1126 cols. (2 per page), 71, [1] pp., folio (16 x 11 in.), ink title on spine, full vellum, text block edges partially dyed darkish blue. With a title-page cartouche framing a classical hero-like figure leaning on his shield and holding an open book to the left, the scrolled motto "Litterarum Felicitas" above. Bernardo Maria de Rubeis (1687-1775), theologian, philologist and historian, was often consulted by the Holy Office for his opinions on ecclesiastical matters and controversies. In Monumenta Ecclesiae Aquilejensis, de Rubeis presents his learned history of the diocese of Aquileia, the ancient Roman city that held the status of patriarchate (one level below the Holy See) until the eighteenth century, when it was reduced to a parish. The work concludes with an appendix consisting of a catalogue of the patriarchs and twelve chronicles. Uncommon. Ex-library, with two late nineteenth/early twentieth-century institutional bookplates on the front pastedown, a small blindstamp on the title page and following leaf, and a small label on the spine; no other ex-library markings. Very good copy overall; vellum covers lightly soiled, light wear to some tips; contents generally clean and fine; spine has some damage to the upper area (with some loss) and several tiny scattered wormholes (no sign of touching text).
