Mathematician, physician, satirist, Arbuthnot is mostly known for his wit and humor, as well as his contribution to mathematics and his role in the founding of the Scriblerus Club, in which he is known to have inspired Jonathan Swift's Gulliver Travels. Such works he also comments in some of the essays put together in this collection of miscellaneous works. Only through such variety can the reader of today really understand the importance of the overlooked figure of the Scottish polymath, for it was in the diversity of his interest and knowledge, and wide range of his works which tackled all subjects, that he exerted the greatest influence on the society of his time; an influence which, rarely considered except by those who know him as a historical figure, should not be neglected. 245 pgs (vol 1) + 310 pgs (vol 2). 4.25 x 6.75 inches. ** Two Volumes. Mentioned as "New Edition." Includes the Memoirs of the Life of John Arbuthnot as introduction. ** Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight.
