** RARE ** 1ST EDITION, 1861 ** HARDCOVER ** ORIGINAL U.S. SENATE PUBLICATION ** COMPLETE AND INTACT ** NOT A LIBRARY BOOK ** With 472 pages. In original Senate black cloth-covered boards decorated in blind with embossed bald eagle symbol and E. Pluribus Unum banner on the front and rear boards, spine was lettered in gilt, now quite dull. Original official U.S. Senate publication and the spine is blind-stamped to that effect. Rare copy of a document issued to detail the dispute that arose between U.S. and Venezuela over Aves (Bird) Island, which occurred when certain U.S. business interests discovered large guano deposits on a small island in the Caribbean, staked their claim there, and then were attacked and forcibly ejected by the Venezuelan navy. An immensely detailed recounting, set forth by the chronological reproduction of letters and other documents of communications among the parties involved over a period from 1855 through 1859. The book is clean and stain-free, square and straight, still firm in its binding, no pages loose or missing. The endpapers are foxed and toned, but the interior pages show just a bit of age toning, very scattered foxing. All text remains easily legible. There is no writing, underlining, highlighting or other such markings in the book. The cloth on the boards is worn through at the corners to the boards beneath. There is wear to the cloth at both the top and bottom of the spine, and the cloth is torn right along the front edge of the spine to a bit more than halfway up its length. Despite this, structurally, the book has maintained its integrity, and is still sound and solid, complete and intact, with the interior hinges untorn and undamaged. This is a fascinating historical document. By Senate order only 2500 were printed. Cover page is a communication from then-president of the U.S., James Buchanan, dated February 23, 1861.
