The Author (1857-1939) was the daughter of William Alexander (Bishop of Derry and Raphoe) and Cecil Frances Alexander, poet (volumes of religious verse, poetry, hymns including "Once In Royal David's City", "All Things Bright and Beautiful" and ballad "Legend of Stumpie's Brae"). Eleanor was a Lady of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, magistrate in Middlesex, member of the Irish Literary Society, and was awarded an MBE (1918), having been in charge of an auxiliary military hospital. She wrote novels, and verse (published in The Times, The Spectator, etc.), & edited her father's autobiography. Eleanor was granted apartments in Hampton Court Palace, London. --- Includes a fine rendition of the Ulster dialect. --- On the 'The Palace' - the Archbishop's Palace - in Armagh and the historical and general interest surrounding the area. --- "If, by any chance, the readers of this little work are led to take an interest in the early histories and stories which I have ventured to weave into it, or in the later historical personages who are mentioned, and with whom they are not so familiar as they would like to be, I refer them to the books that gave me their companionship during long dark evenings." --- Original green cloth boards, printed vellum labels spine and top board (20.9 cm height). Somewhat rubbed, age discolouration to spine. Previous owner's signature front free endpaper. All edges uncut. Attached green ribbon marker. Internally very sound.
