Quoting Borba: 519: "Paul Marcoy is the pseudonym of L. de Saint-Cricq, who also used the name 'Carmoy.' He was a companion of Castelnau. After a life of hazards and adventure, Marcoy lived quietly as 'Inspector of the Pordeaux Botanica Gardens.' In this lively and witty book he describes one of his journeys. The brazilian part of the voyage includes a journey down the Amazon from Tabatinga to Belem." Quoting the text, Vol. IV, pp. 479, "La Barra [Manaus] is peopled by some three thousand souls, two-thirds of whom constitute its permanent residents, and the other third its floating population. The number of houses is estimated at one hundred and forty-seven. These houses are spacious and well-ventilated, but generally devoid of all comfort and movable furniture. All have gardens or little enclosures, badly kept and overrun with weeds. Even poisonous plants and serpents abound in them, so that it is only in fear and trembling that one can gather their roses or haricots. The inhabitants of Barra are exclusively devoted to commerce, with the distinction that some are wholesale, others retail dealers. The wholesale merchants receive from the Upper Amazon consignments of chocolate, coffee, cocou, sarsaparilla, fat of the turtle and lamantin, andirhoba oils, copaiba, and other commodities which I need not here enumerate. These products arrive in small lots, and are warehoused until there is enough of them to complete the lading of a small vessel. They are then despatched to Para, where some are consumed and others exported to Europe." Size: 34.5 x 27 cm.
