VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book, sorry no dust-jacket. "An Island Afloat" By Silas Grigg (Master Mariner), the Stops Put in by Gordon Stables, R.N. This is the Fisrt Edition, published by James Nisbet & Co., Limited, 1903. 12mo, 20.3 cm x 14 cm x 3.5 cm, Grey decorated cloth-covered boards, Gilt embossed lettering & colour decoration showing a soldier on a horse on spine, Gilt embossed lettering & colour decoration on front cover showing a young boy sitting on a wall leaning against an ornate column and looking out to the mountains, Top edge gilt, Some rough-cut pages. 336 pages. Weight: 617 Grams. CONTENTS ARE MOSTLY LIKE NEW!!! However, there are several cracks in between pages throughout the book. Spine is slightly marked, bumped, scuffed & a little frayed either end, gilt a little dull, colour decoration lovely but very slightly worn away in places. Cover is slightly grubby round edges & scuffed in places, some small marks (more so on back), decoration very nice but worn away & scuffed in places, gilt slightly dull, edge wear. Corners are bumped & scuffed, 2 are frayed, boards exposed there. Top edge gilt a bit dull & scuffed. Ink annotation (name) and corner piece missing on 1st free end paper. Glue marks and slight damage to paper on 1st end paper. Some pages (very few) have tiny edge bumps & tears (including either end of spine area), and/or corner folds/creases (including either end of spine area), and/or faint finger smudges, and/or darker foxing mark on top edge. Tiny shop sticker on last end paper. 2 splits in spine area of last end paper. Light age tanning & very occasional foxing throughout. VERY RARE ITEM, BEAUTIFUL INSIDE!!!
