First Edition, London 1790. Near Fine. pp.1752. Containing John Stockdale's 8 page catalogue, including an advert for his forthcoming two volume Folio edition of Shakespeare's Dramatic Works, which was published later in 1790. Near Fine in original Calf boards with tooling around margins, re-backed, in matching calf with 5 raised bands. Green leather label, gilded titles. In Excellent Condition. Faint foxing on title page otherwise all pages clean and bright. Text block and binding tight. A lovely copy. Note: "Until Ayscough brought out his 'Index' in 1790 there was no concordance to Shakespeare. This was a speculation on the part of the publisher, John Stockdale, who paid two hundred guineas for the index, which was specially designed to accompany his two volume edition of the 'Dramatic Works'. In this compilation the words are arranged alphabetically with the lines in which they occur, then the name of the play, and in five separate columns the act, scene, page, column, and line. The last three refer only to the edition of 1790, but the index may be used with any other text."( Wikipedia). N° de ref. del artículo 2015/3
