Scarce first edition with the title-page! Subscriber's Copy. 4to. pp.xii /pp.168 . A very good tight vellum binding. Boards lightly soiled and rubbed. Smooth spine with dulled red leather title label: Holman's Halstead. Armorial bookplate to verso of the front board: "Meyrick F. L. Beebee." ; with motto - "Se Defendendo" . Foxing to title and next leaf, and last 2 leaves of the index. Otherwise clean text throughout. ** William Holman was a nonconformist minister in Halstead from 1700 until his death on 4 November 1730 at the age of 60. He was buried at the Old Independent Chapel in Halstead. Holman began to collect material for a history of the Hinckford Hundred about 1710. After his death Holman's MSS passed to his son who apparently sold them. By 1894 Holman's MS History of Essex was in Colchester Museum. C.F.D. Sperling has written on Holman's life as well as his manuscripts in 'Essex Review' , III, pp. 261-6, IV, pp. 194-6, and VIII, p. 47. *** "Meyrick John Legge Beebee was born on 27 December 1871 in Ballygunge, West Bengal, India, his father, Reverend, was 29 and his mother, Eliza, was 25. He married Hilda Georgiana Leigh in 1906 in London, London. They had three children in 14 years. He died on 7 March 1956 in Radnorshire at the age of 84. He was a Captain in the East India Naval Service, and later a Barrister-at-law " elected Master of the Bench of the Inner Temple. " **** " His son: Meyrick Frederick Legge Beebee was born on 16 July 1910 in London, London, his father, Meyrick, was 38 and his mother, Hilda, was 33. He married Jean Mary Joy Walker in September 1935 in East, Ohio, USA. They had three children during their marriage. He died on 6 May 1988 at the age of 77.
