12mo., 215 pp., lithographed folding map on rice paper. Bound in publisher's original black cloth titled in gilt at the spine, and decorated in blind at the front panel. Housed in a brown cloth slipcase backed in quarter calf gilt raised in five bands at the spine. A well-preserved, near fine copy. The cloth a bit bumped, and slightly frayed at spine ends; Scattered foxing, mostly concentrated on the endpapers, but the text generally clean; the rare map bright and fine, with only the slightest hint of foxing. Provenance: from the library of T. F. Harwood, with his signature in pencil to the ffep, and bookplate to fep. An important and early Texas account, in the publisher's binding, with the rare map. Newell was a non-Texan, who visited the area in 1837 for health reasons. His account draws from Texan and Mexican sources, giving accounts of the events of 1836, and the capture of Santa Anna. In his foreward Newell states that much of the material came directly from conversations with Sam Houston, Lamar, Huston, Poe, Ward, Neil, and Shackleford. Howes N115. Rader 2479. Raines, p. 154.
