hardback, five parts in two volumes published between 1822 and 1841, folios measuring 19 2/5" x 11", contemporary half-calf with marbled boards, sometime re-backed with original backstrip laid down, rubbed heavily to corners of boards and les so to remaining extremities, six raised bands to spine, of the compartments two with gilt titles on deepest blue morocco, others with part faded gilt tooling, stitching remains tight. Volume I with an 1822 title page but a duplicate title page the third part inserted before page 540, volume II, as is common, bound without a title page. Sporadic foxing to the text, heavy in one or two gatherings of volume I, heavy to pp173-194 of volume II, some offsetting to the text from the etched and engraved illustrations which are present in addition to the thirty-nine uncoloured plates. The plates are erratically distributed, with a frontis and ten to volume II, many remain tissue guarded, one has foxing to the lower margin, the two of Greens Norton Church have a light water stain to bottom half at gutter, that of the memorial to Issac Hawker Browne has a trifling ink mark to the leading edge at bottom leading corner, most are uncommonly clean and crisp. Tipped-in catalogue entry and a small address label of a previous owner at front of the first volume. Bound in at the rear of volume II is the scarce Index Locorum of 1867. Volume I, 780 [with 2 additional leaves] : Volume II, [ii] 342, [i] + 12. Because of weight, a request for additional postage will be made if ordered from certain overseas locations. Lowndes states ' One of the most valuable topographical works ever published, displaying great industry and research".
