Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1886, First Edition. Approximately 6 ¾ inches tall, very good condition. 69 pages. Original pictorial cloth binding. Scarce volume. This is a First Edition of the First book written by Horace Hutchinson, a well known character in golf in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is thought that the print run for this volume was limited to 1000 copies and that this was the first publication on the subject of golf training or instruction sold to the general public. In good condition, it looks to have been repaired to the hinges, with slightly different coloured paper to the front hinge. Tightly bound. 2 pencil notes to the pages, and a red mark to the rear cover. 69pp. Horatio Gordon "Horace" Hutchinson (1859 1932) was an English amateur golfer who played in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Hutchinson won the 1886 and 1887 Amateur Championships. He had three top-10 finishes in the Open Championship, his best result being sixth in the 1890 Open Championship. He was also a prolific writer of books on the subject of golf and other sporting themes. Hutchinson was the first English captain of the R&A links at St Andrews Golf Club, Scotland. He suffered from grave illness in the latter portion of his life and committed suicide in Chelsea, London, England, on 27 July 1932. Approximately 6 ¾ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition ever so slightly faded, black titles, gently worn with some colour variation/fading. Joints good condition gently worn. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition age marks and wear to the original pictorial front board with black titles and publisher details, red mark to the rear board. Page edges good condition top edge darkened, other edges tanned. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition repaired, sound and strong. Paste downs good condition original plain dark paper. End papers good condition original dark plain paper. Title good condition gently tanned.
