First edition hardcover, bound in dark red cloth, with gilt lettering on front cover and spine, is in G condition, having some fading to the gilt lettering; book originally published with uncut pages, and there is some roughness to the page edges where former owner opened the pages with a blade (some chads, etc.); slight scuff mark to front cover; this copy was from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio Library, and there is a stamp revealing that at bottom of first free endpaper (see photo); faint impression of paper-clip on first few pages where notes had once been attached; normal age-toning to pages. Dust jacket, enclosed in protective mylar (mylar not pictured), is in Fair condition, having some tears to top front and back, missing very top of spine edge, and chipping to edges; tiny hole half-way down the spine edge, and general rubbing/scuffing to surface. Book is illustrated with a few b&w photographs of various Hays Office executives, including the man in charge, Will H. Hays. A sympathetic (and probably authorized) history of the Hays Office, the much now-vilified and criticized organization that tried to heighten the moral tone of the American film industry, and keep material the organization deemed unsuitable for audiences from being released.
