Mason, A. E. W. The Four Corners of the World. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1917. First U.S. edition. Original terra cotta decorative cloth, front panel stamped in blind and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, fore-edge and bottom edge rough trimmed. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1-2] 3-462 [463: blank]. Old private library bookplate on front paste-down. Spine panel somewhat faded, top edge of text block dusty, missing front free endpaper, front inner hinge repaired a bit clumsily but holding firm, a good serviceable copy. This U.S. first seems to be less common now than the U.K. first (Hodder & Stoughton, 1917) and also seems prone to sunning of the cloth. #3322. $45. Collects twelve short stories and a play. Included is "The Affair at the Semiramis Hotel," one of Mason's three short stories featuring Inspector Hanaud, a French detective who appeared earlier in At the Villa Rose (1910). Four supernatural stories ("The Clock," "Raymond Byatt," "The House of Terror," and "The Refuge") are included, most of them blending motifs from the literature of crime, fantasy and horror, with an emphasis on dark tones. "Competent, higher level commercial fiction." -- Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction #1122. Bleiler (1978), p. 135. Reginald 09745. Queen's Quorum 59. Listed in Hubin. N° de ref. del artículo 3322
