Printed wrapper, 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches, 68 clean pp. Stephen Grellet (1773-1855), b. Limoges, France; d. Burlington, NJ. He was born Étienne de Grellet du Mabillier, to a counsellor of King Louis XVI. He was raised as a Catholic and was educated at the military college of Lyons, entering the body-guard of Louis XVI at the age of seventeen. Sentenced to execution during the French Revolution, Grellet escaped and fled to the United States. He was converted to the Society of Friends through the writings of William Penn and other prominent writers of that sect, and became an itinerant missionary. His travels throughout Europe and North America were astonishing in number and effect; he entered prisons and hospitals on missions of mercy and evangelism, and was granted meetings with many people of high rank, including Pope Pius VII., Tsar Alexander I, and the Kings of Spain and Prussia. Grellet visited the poor and downcast everywhere, even making a visit to the island of Haiti. He used his influence effectively to bring about reforms in education, hospital conditions, and prison conditions. It was said that he was the last person who could have identified the "Lost Dauphin" of France. N° de ref. del artículo 9096
