A Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas, being A Guide to the History of North and South America, and the West Indies: exhibiting an Accurate Account of the Discovery, Settlement, and Progress of their Various Kingdoms, States, Provinces, &c. together with the Wars, Celebrated Battles, and Remarkable Events, to the Year 1822. According to the Plan of Le Sage's Atlas, and intended as a Companion to Lavoisne's Improvement of that Celebrated Work. Philadelphia: H.C. Carey and I. Lea, - Chestnut Street, 1822. Folio (17 4/8 x 12 inches). Letterpress title-page, Advertisement leaf, Contents leaf (all browned, creased and frayed at the edges, title-page strengthened in one or two places on verso). 46 double-page engraved maps set within broad letterpress margins, 3 double-page letterpress statistical pages, and a comparative list of the rivers of the world, all with original hand-colour in full, one uncoloured plate of the mountains of the world. (map of Michigan and Florida torn and laid down, some marginal tears, browned). Modern green library cloth. Provenance: With the bookplate of the Free Library of Philadelphia, Map Division, on the front free endpaper, and their ink library stamp at the foot of the Advertisement leaf; with Christie's, June 17th, 2003, lot 205 First edition.The map of the United States shows Texas as part of Mexico, and the accompany leaf of text states: "In 1819, a treaty was concluded with Spain, by which that power agreed to cede Florida to the United States. After many vexatious delays on the part of the Spanish crown, the treaty was finally ratified, and the American troops took possession of the territory in 1821. In 1822, the congress of the United States, by an almost unanimous vote in each house , recognized the independence of the late Spanish provinces in America". The map of Arkansa Territory is based on the discoveries of Major S.H. Long, and preceded the map published with Long's official account, also published by Carey and Lea in 1822 and 1823. The map of Mexico is the FIRST TO SHOW IT AFTER INDEPENDENCE. The accompanying text declares that "In February, 1821, a glorious and effectual revolution took place, which has ended in the acknowledgement of the independence of Mexico, by Don Juan O'Donoju, who had been recently captain-general of new Spain by the Spanish government".
