Descripción
Grey printed boards, mounted cover illustration, 8vo, [12], 127 pp, facs. 320 lots. With a foreword by Christopher Morley. Catalogue of an outstanding sale of Whitman manuscripts, portraits and other material - Bucke was a close friend of Whitman for many years and one of his literary executors. From the prefaratory note: "the part of Dr. Richard M. Bucke s Whitman material described in this catalogue is one of the largest collections of autograph manuscripts by an American author that has ever appeared at public sale in this country at one time. It is not in its bulk, however, that the importance of the collection lies, but in the fact that every scrap of paper comprising it is a link in the great chain of thought that finally established a new literature. An effort has been made to classify this material in such a way as to show the development of this new literature from its remote ancestry to the crowning achievement…The portraits in this collection are worthy of particular mention. Many of the items are accompanied by original photographs, reproductions, or engraved portraits of the poet. These form, as a whole, one of the largest collections in existence and include some hitherto un-known portraits and many signed and dated by Walt Whitman." The sale items were described as "Purchased at public sale in London, England, by The Ulysses Bookshop, ltd., or by private treaty by Dr. Jacob Schwartz, London, England; to be dispersed. by order of Dr. Jacob Schwartz individually and as president of the Ulysses Bookshop, ltd., London, England.", the public sale referred to being that at Sotheby's on 13 May, 1935. Boards a little fingersoiled and a trifle rubbed, otherwise Near Very Good. N° de ref. del artículo ABE-29777
