Newberry award winning author Armstrong Sperry worked as an ethnologist on a South Pacific scientific research boat in 1924 & 25, which led to his interest in writing stories for children about the cultures of those regions. Although his works are somewhat dated when seen through a modern lens of cultural sensitivity, at the time of publication in 1942 his ethnological approach to describing foreign cultures felt informative and filled with respect for other cultures. In this warm and wholesome story, Sun Yo helps his father harvest bamboo to create beautiful, unique birdcages. Through the rich red illustrations on nearly every page and the careful details in the text, we learn about Sun Yo's home, family, meals, transportation, and other aspects of both rural & city life in China. The story ends with a friendly (although distant!) connection between Sun Yo and a young American boy, and conveys the admiration & respect that Sperry had for the communities he met in his travels.
