[Limitation statement]: "Note. 510 copies printed on this fine deckle-edge demy 8vo paper for England and America, with portraits as India proofs after letters. Each copy is numbered, and the type distributed. No. 240" (and #224 for volume 2). Two volumes, tall octavo; size of bindings: 5 3/4 in. x 8 3/4 in. x 1 3/4 in, Volume 1: frontispiece portrait of Colley Cibber; [i]-lxxi, [1]-337 pp.; Volume 2: frontispiece portrait of Cibber; [viii]pp., pp. [1]-416 (including index), + printer's leaf. Both volumes are illustrated with 13 inserted plates with tissue guards, these are mezzotints on India paper, mounted on a thicker paper; engraved by Robert Bowyer Parkes, and 9 etched chapter headings (also on India paper, and mounted at the beginning of the chapters), "newly etched from contemporary drawings by Adolphe Lalauze" (1838-1906), giving a total of 26 mezzotints & 18 etched chapter headings. Bound in quarter, dark brown, morocco leather spines, sides and corner-pieces, by Stikeman & Co., with their stamp on the upper edge of the back of the front endpapers; featuring five raised bands on the spines, with gilt-lettered titling, volume numbers, place and date on spines, single-line gilt borders along edges of sides and corner-pieces; headbands, top-edges gilt, brown paper endpapers. Former owner's printed book labels pasted to each front brown paper paste-down. Spine ends show light wear, with a 1/4 inch chip out of the upper spine end of volume one, wear to cover corners, a few small abrasions to leather outer hinges, sides, spine bands, with a few small spots to spines of both volumes.
