Blue cloth faded to purple, with matched and new spine with gilt lettered title in period font. xvi, 336+8 ads pp. 6 tinted lithographs. A very good, unfoxed copy of this scarce and important book. Chronologically details the trip Frederic Church made to the northern tip of Newfoundland in search of Icebergs to paint. Also gives some insight to the philosophical foundations for Church's style (both personal and artistic) and possibly Luminism as well. V. scarce, and a nice copy. VG, crisp copy, light age soiling even over covers, small bump to upper right hand corner of back cover, some foxing to first tissue paper, slight yellowing to page edges, slight loss to edge of page listing illustrations. Ex Hartford, CT public library with pocket at rear (quite interesting, since Church was born in Hartford and his parents spent their lives there and were prominent members of the community there) and presentation bookplate inside cover, light pencil notations near library marks. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a captivating account of a voyage undertaken in the summer of 1859, along the northeastern coast of British America. The author, a passionate observer of nature, embarked on this expedition with a distinguished landscape painter, their shared purpose being to study and sketch icebergs. Their journey began with the initial belief that the shores of Newfoundland would offer sufficient opportunities for observation, but they soon discovered the need to venture further, into the midst of the icebergs themselves. They hired a small vessel and sailed to Labrador, where they found an abundance of icebergs and the perfect setting for their artistic endeavors. The author's narrative takes the reader on a richly detailed voyage, capturing the awe-inspiring grandeur of the icebergs, the dramatic beauty of the rugged coastline, and the fascinating encounters with the local people and their unique way of life. The journey extends beyond the hunt for icebergs, encompassing a diverse range of experiences, including visits to St. John's, Newfoundland, and a picturesque ride across the island. The author's writing style is both evocative and engaging, conveying a deep sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. The book reflects a broader interest in the exploration and documentation of natural phenomena that was prevalent in the mid-19th century. The author's fascination with icebergs speaks to a scientific curiosity that was intertwined with artistic expression, a characteristic of a period when the scientific study of nature was gaining momentum. This book offers a unique window into the world of 19th-century exploration, capturing the beauty and majesty of the natural world, while simultaneously illuminating the author's personal reflections and observations on the human condition.
