Descripción

Descripción:

A Fine copy of the book in nearly Fine dust jacket. Book clean in bright green cloth with yellow stamping. Top-stain just a bit faded. Dust jacket complete and very fresh with just a touch of fading to the spine. With all first issue points in the book and on the dust jacket ("fool Red Cross woman" p 9; Kerouac blurb on the front flap, etc.). Housed in a blue quarter-leather clamshell case. This copy inscribed in the fall of 2001 to a collector (shortly before Kesey's death): "For Will - This is a rare edition. Only 1500 were printed, then I had to change the Red Cross nurse - a woman sued me. Ken Kesey." The story of Kesey's change to the novel, referenced in the inscription, has become literary legend. Kesey had caricatured the real-life novelist and songwriter Gwen Davis (1934 - 2023) as a Red Cross nurse in the book, describing her as a "fool Red Cross woman"; Davis threatened to sue Kesey for the unflattering portrayal, and the phrase was changed in later printings. Ironically, Davis later published a novel about a nude therapy group and was sued for her own thinly-veiled caricature of a therapist. Kesey's masterpiece, a cornerstone of modern fiction and an enduring study of the human mind. Kesey s first published novel was born out of his participation in an experimental hallucinogenic drug research program at Menlo Park Veterans Hospital while working towards a creative writing degree at Stanford University. Set in a psychiatric facility populated by colorful characters, the story raises questions of sanity and institutional power. A counterculture classic and basis for multiple adaptations including the 1975 film, starring Jack Nicholson, which won of all five major Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. N° de ref. del artículo 7518

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Ken Kesey (1962) 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', US first editions, first printing and first state. Signed and inscribed by the author on the ffep: "For Michael [underscore] Ken Kesey". First state with "That fool Red Cross Woman" on page 9, and "Red Cross woman named Gwen-doe-lin, with the blond hair the patients are always arguing about." on the top of page 86 as called for. Those passages were in subsequent printings removed following a court case which Kesey lost. About the Kesey signature: Ken Kesey whenever his time permitted and fans sent in their books for him to sign used to pen this title in various colours. This was meant to represent the psychedellic period of his life and also the topic of the book. Kesey took LSD as part of CIA experiments and later also other drugs together with the Beat Generation of American writers. Condition: the book is in absolutely fine condition without any previous owner's scribbles, no bookplates and no stamps. The cloth boards are vibrant in colour and clean and the lettering on the spine is NOT rubbed out as often encountered. No bumps to any of the corners. NO foxing. The very good original first state dust jacket designed by Paul Bacon is NOT price clipped showing the USD 4.95 and Jack Kerouac blurb as called for. There are three small professional tape repairs to the jacket as shown and the top spine edge has been a triffle retouched. The spine is just a touch colour faeded compared to the front panel. The book is housed in a sturdy quarter bound leather tray case which protects the book for generations to come. The spine of the case displays the title, author's name, year and 'Presentation Copy' and makes it stand out on the shelf. A scarce landmark book in superb condition of one of the most important and influential American books of the 20th century, and defining novel of the counter-culture movement. Adapted for cinema by Milo Forman in 1975 starring Jack Nicholson. The film won five Academy Awards (Oscars). First and Fine. Signed by Author(s). Nº de ref. del artículo: ABE-1619251334410
