A letter dated 21.9.1892 from Thomas Hughes to Edmund (not otherwise identified - this may be a Christian or a surname, perhaps more likely the latter; at the end of his letter Hughes sends 'Kindest remembrances' to Miss or Mrs Edmund). The letter is a response to Edmund's proposal for a testimonial to the work of a person named Neale, who has just died, by his Oxford college, Oriel (which was also Hughes's college). Thomas Hughes QC (20 October 1822 22 March 1896) was an English lawyer, judge, politician and author. He is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days (1857), a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes had attended. It had a lesser-known sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford (1861). Edward Vansittart Neale (1810 1892) was an English barrister, cooperator, and Christian socialist. Hughes and Neale seem to have been friends and colleagues who worked together on various projects and pamphlets. The letter from Hughes, in which he agrees to help with the testimonial is dated five days after Neale's death which occurred on 16.09.1892. N° de ref. del artículo 128
