Título: The life and adventures of Peter Wilkins, A ...

Editorial: London: printed for J. Robinson; and R. Dodsley, 1751

Año de publicación: 1751

Edición: 1st Edition

2 volumes, 12mo. Late 19th-century mottled calf by Rivière and Son, smooth spines gilt in compartments, green morocco labels, sides ruled in gilt with a French fillet, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Rubbed, joints restored, a little light foxing to outer leaves, a very good copy. With 6 engraved plates (one folding) by Louis Peter Boitard, one as frontispiece to each volume; woodcut diagram in text. Bookplates of Charles George Milnes Gaskell. First edition of this interesting imaginary voyage, which has a place in the prehistory of science fiction. The story tells of a castaway in a fantastic land where men and women can fly. The debt to Robinson Crusoe is clear, also to the Arabian Nights and Gulliver's Travels, though the narrative is highly inventive on its own terms. The hero's surname is probably intended to recall John Wilkins, whose Mathematical Magick (1648) argued that man might master the art of flying. The novel was little noticed on first publication, though it was reissued in England in 1783, and there was a cheap Dublin reprint (1751), a French translation (1763), and a German abridgement (1767). The book only became popular and its author's name well known in the 19th century, when it was admired by Coleridge, Southey, Shelley, Leigh Hunt, Charles Lamb, and others of their generation. It provided material for pantomimes and melodramas from 1800 to the 1870s, and was frequently reprinted. Sabin 58394. N° de ref. de la librería 42950
