Sole edition. 12mo. circa 6.25 x 4 inches, pp. engraved frontis + 143 + 1 (ad), 5 full-page engravings in text, hardback in original decorated cloth. Book condition - near VG., contents clean, ink inscription on front flyleaf ("E H Barker, Salisbury, Oct. 8th 1892"), moderate tanning/offsetting on front and back flyleaves but no foxing at all in text block, binding firm with inner hinges intact ; original, brown cloth with decorated gilt title to spine and decorative blind decoration with decorated gilt title to front board, back board plain; corners somewhat rubbed and bent , back with a few very minor marks and good clean appearance overall, spine complete with ends rubbed but not split and with some rubbing of hinges, spine title a little dulled but complete and still very distinct , front clean with bright gilt title. The contents are in five sections entitled - Remarkable Bird Cage , Birds of Paradise, A Wonderful Ship, Interesting Walks and Talks, Borrowed Axe - and within each are a number of instructional stories. From the advertisements in the book, it is obvious that the author wrote and self published a number of scriptural instruction books and magazines (One book advert quotes a review of "The Morte Stone" - "None of your nod your head and got to sleep Sunday School addresses, but all alive and awake ones, enforced by crip, dewy illustrations. Get it, Mr Proser, and study it, next time you intend to torture the children from your platform;."). No other copies for sale found at the time of listiing.
