[From foreword] It may be one of the wonders of life. Being born inSeattle at the close of the Meiji era, I spent my early childhood in Japan, surrounded by vast marshlands and in the distance mountains covered with thick impenetrable forests. As if in the distance, the Taisho era seemed to refleet a faint and frail light of democratic ideology which had been slowly nurtured to that time. It was a time when my elder cousin Yasujiro entertained plans of a grand ambition?operating a horse ranch of at least five sections in the United States??and when I moved ahead with high hopes and enthusiasm, pressed by my youthto seek my own destiny. This was late Taisho. When the Showa era began, time seemed to fly past me as I started a long journey to the United States from the icy shores of Kushiro, a desolate land near the west end of Hokkaido. With fervent zeal I vowed that I would not return unless and until I accomplished my original goals. The sixty years of my life in the United States were parts of hidden history, marked by hardships and violent ups and downs. Before the war, I toiled to support myself while studying. During the war, I struggled with depression. After the war, my return to the west coast was illstarred by confrontations with people whose prejudices lingered long after the conflict ceased.
