Medz?io droz?iniai gimtajam kras?tui atsiminti / Koncius: Lithuanian intellectual, scientist, and cultural historian who taught physics, protected national cultural monuments and led the physics department in Kaunus. Arrested in 1941 and escaped the 1941 Soviet massacre in Cherven. Later moved to Germany, then in 1949 to the US (for details see Lithuanian Wikipedia page, as translated using Google translator). THIS BOOK: Pages 19-215 consist of black and white photos of shrines (small wooden models of religious content) Koncius has carved from wood, from memory, standing for the many shrines in eastern Samotitia, Lithuania. In a brief 2-page foreword in English the author notes the history of these shrines since the 13th century and their decline, particularly under Russian and German occupation. A one-page "Publisher's word" by Liudas J. Koncius recalls that his father made wood carvings to make a living in World War I and then again in the 1930s. "Later whe he was forced to flee Lithuania he tood with him 2 small drills and an awl which he made from a nail." - "Much of his carving was done while confined to DP Camps in Bavaria. Some wered carved and given away. Others were carefully taken apart, stored in a small suitcase and taken with him when he came to the United States. Titles below each photograph of each work are in Lithuanian and in English: they "are symbolic to the author but lose their meaning to great extent when translated. They are only to be used as a guide if one wishes to try to understand their meaning." - Includes 8-pages of text in Lithuanian which clearly exceeds the brief English versions by author and publisher.
