[10]pp., pp. [1]-450, including indexes to both volumes. Reproduces 950 black & white photographs of animals, birds, fish, fungi, etc., map of Lake Superior Region. Dark blue cloth, with titling gilt on the spines, and with the NGS device on the front covers. The spine ends, cover edges, corners show light rubbing. With the bookplates of Cleveland, Ohio based book collector, and natural history enthusiast, William G. Mather (1857-1951), on the front paste-down endpapers. This copy was inscribed and signed to him by his friend, George Shiras 3rd., on the front free flyleaf of the first volume: "To William G. Mather: I am sending you a copy of my book with the hope it will pleasantly recall some of our boyhood days on Lake Superior. Just as I now recall your later activities in game conservation, and the personal interest that you have taken in the flora and fauna of this region, busy as you were. [signed]: Geo Shiras 3d Dec. 16th 1935". Inscribed copies of the 1935 set are uncommon, especially with this type of inscription; an important and neglected photographic and textual record in its own right. Volume One covers the Lake Superior Region, Volume Two has material on: Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Cayuga Lake, Long Island Sound, Sandusky Bay [Ohio], Washington D.C. (birds), Eastern Shore of Virginia, Revels Island, Currituck Sound North Carolina (wild fowl), Cumberland Island Georgia, Florida, Bahama Islands, Louisiana marshes, Eastern Mexico (birds), Gatun Lake Canal Zone, Yellowstone Park, Kaibab Plateau Arizona (mule deer), Alaska (moose & brown bear), Kenai (white sheep).
