Archive of Letters of English Actress Phyllis Neilson-Terry, 1919-1942 44 typed and handwritten letters, 17 printed and signed Christmas cards Generally, Very Good condition, a few with scattered spotting, one with a 2" tear affecting part of signature. A small collection of signed, typed and handwritten thank you letters, and Christmas cards sent from a noted English actress, Phyllis Neilson-Terry, to two longtime fans. Phyllis Neilson-Terry (1892-1977) was born in London, the daughter of actors Julia Neilson and Fred Terry, into the third generation of the Terry family, a noted British theatrical dynasty. She was educated in Paris and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied to be a singer. She made her stage debut at age 16, took over a leading role when her mother fell ill the following year, and began to make waves. She received accolades and enthusiastic reviews along with roles, particularly in classic drama. Between 1910 and 1913 she played Rosalind in "As You Like It," Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet," Desdemona in "Othello," and Portia in "The Merchant of Venice." She then went to the United States on a long-term contract, returning to England in 1919, and during the 1920s toured South Africa. Neilson-Terry led a varied and successful career, performing in cabaret, pantomime and variety programs, as well as continuing with the classics and Shakespeare. She also appeared in eleven films. One of her last major roles was on Broadway in Terence Rattigan's "Separate Tables." These notes and letters reveal a longstanding relationship between the actress and two fans, whom she calls "my dears," "two perfect pets," and "little friends." Over the years the girls, Misses Frances and Vera Peel of Sussex, sent flowers, notes, birthday cards and well wishes, and Neilson-Terry responded with gratitude and gusto. The letters also convey the star's busy and varied schedule. They appear on stationery of various theaters and hotels throughout London and Britain, as well as one "On board the R.M.S. Baltic." Six were on Neilson-Terry's own letterhead, revealing her whereabouts of "This Week" and "Next Week." There are also 17 Christmas cards she sent to the girls. A lovely collection providing a personal glimpse into the life and career of a successful actress. While several institutions carry portraits of Phyllis Neilson-Terry, OCLC locates only one of her letters, at the Folger Shakespeare Library. A collection of her costume jewelry and theatrical memorabilia was sold at auction in 1979 at Christie's South Kensington. N° de ref. del artículo 652
