ABEBOOKS.COM APPOINTS JOHN CHASE AS CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
(Victoria, BC – February 16, 2006) John Chase has been appointed Chief Financial Officer by Abebooks.com – the world's largest online marketplace for new, used, rare and out-of-print books.
He brings over 25 years of business and financial experience, and has worked for Amazon.com's marketplace division, Exchange.com, an early competitor of eBay, and Rounder Records – the world's largest independent record label.
He has recently spent two years in Victoria (2003-2005) with Power Measurement - the energy management technology firm - as its chief financial officer.
Massachusetts-based Exchange.com was an online marketplace that specialized in niche markets, such as rare books, and eventually purchased Bibliofind.com – one of Abebooks' early competitors. Amazon then acquired both Exchange.com and Bibilofind, and John relocated to Amazon's Seattle headquarters in 1999.
John initially served as chief financial executive for Amazon's fledgling marketplace division before being appointed director of finance, planning and analysis.
"John understands the Abebooks.com business model because he has already worked in very similar marketplace environments at Exchange.com and Amazon. He's going to be a tremendous addition to our company," said Hannes Blum, CEO and president of Abebooks.com.
A graduate of Northeastern University and Boston College, John began his career with Price Waterhouse.
John succeeds Bryan Wilson, who is retiring after five years at Abebooks.com and 15 years as a CFO for other technology companies. "Bryan has smoothly guided Abebooks' finances through a period of amazing growth and he has been a key figure in our success," said Hannes Blum. "We wish him all the best."
Abebooks.com is the world's largest online marketplace for books, with over 80 million new, used, rare, and out-of-print titles listed for sale by more than 13,500 independent booksellers from around the world. Abebooks has millions of customers who purchase up to 20,000 books a day from its 5 global websites. A true internet success story, Abebooks has been selling books online since 1996, and is a private company based in Victoria, BC Canada, with offices in Germany and Spain. Internet Retailer magazine ranked Abebooks at No. 58 among North American online retailers in June 2005.
