World’s largest online marketplace for books reports 300% growth in new book sales since June 2004
(New York, Book Expo America - June 3, 2005) Abebooks.com is proving its potential in new book sales with the release of key figures for the past 12 months.
Fuelled by its official launch into new books at Book Expo America in June 2004, Abebooks.com now sells up to 25,000 books each day with an impressive 20 per cent of all sales now attributed to new books. The world’s largest online marketplace for books plans to recruit more new book sellers at this year’s BEA in order to satisfy customer demand.
"We’ve enjoyed a 300 per cent increase in sales of new books since last June without any negative effect on sales from our traditional used, rare, and out-of-print book inventory," said Hannes Blum, president and CEO of Abebooks.com. "We’ve proven we can sell books of any type and our new challenge is to build our selection. It’s exciting to watch the evolution of our marketplace, as publishers and booksellers recognize that we are an extremely viable channel for selling their books. Our numbers speak for themselves."
In the past 12 months, 64 per cent of books added to the Abebooks’ inventory have been new. With more than 70 million books for sale in total, over half of the company’s top 100 sellers (by sales) now specialize in new books.
"We get one million unique visitors to Abebooks every week, and in the past 12 months we have actively marketed ourselves as the source for any book," added Blum. "Our New Book Room occupies a prominent position, alongside our Rare Book Room, on our home page, we have advertised on US cable networks and in major publications, and interviewed many best-selling authors to promote sales of their new books. Interest in used and rare books is as strong as ever, but we know that 97 per cent of our buyers also buy new books. Why send them away?"
Indoo.com joined Abebooks.com in August 2004 to develop an extra sales channel for its vast inventory of new books. In business since 2002, Indoo sells new books from 15 publishers, including major names such as Wiley, Pearson, Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. The company – based in Avenel, New Jersey – currently lists 115,000 books at Abebooks.com
