Condición del libro: Antiquarian

Descripción:

Presses Universitaires de France, Paris, 1951. 432p. Sewn. Partly unopened. Pages yellowed. Cover and spine a bit stained. 'In this important book Professor Cloché, using as a substantial foundation his many books and articles on Greek history, has presented a consecutive history of the Athenian democracy from the archonship of Solon to the death of Demosthenes. It is eminently lucid and readable. It is well documented with references in footnotes to the ancient literary sources, with a select bibliography of modern works in an appendix, and with an index. (.) The main subject is the political history of Athens (.) during the period 510-322 B.C., which is devided into two halves, that before 403 B.C., (.) that after 403 B.C. (.). Between the two main halves of the political history there are placed three very interesting chapters which concern the working of democracy during the fourth century B.C., together with its effect upon society and the criticisms advanced against it by contemporary writers. These chapters are particulary stimulating and valuable. In the main part of his book Professor Cloché has written a clear, well-documented, and impartial history of the democracy. The great merit of the book is its fidelity to the written sources. The evidence is carefully marshalled and presented before a verdict is given on any controversial topic.' (N.G.L. HAMMOND in The Classical Review (New Series), 1953, pp.42-43). Antiquarian. N° de ref. de la librería 32665

Descripción de la librería: Scrinium Classical Antiquity, member of the Dutch Association of Antiquarian Booksellers (NVvA - ILAB), stands for a specialized stock of new, secondhand and antiquarian books about Classical Antiquity. The main theme of our books is Classical Antiquity: texts and commentaries, translations, archeology, philosophy, travel, history, mythology, books for young people, philology, law, reception of classical motives in Middle Ages, Renaissance and our own time and neo-Hellenika (conptemporary Greece), and many more subjects. A more modest quantity of our books concerns countries, civilisations and religious movements on the edges of the classical world: e.g. Egypt, Middle East and Early Christianity. New books are partly in stock, partly to be ordered from publishers. We are connected to a large number of publishers and distributors, established both in the Netherlands and abroad.
