Tolosano di nascita, il teologo domenicano Serry (1658-1738) fu sostenitore delle tesi gallicane (autonomia della chiesa francese dal papato), ma divenuto consultore del S. Uffizio a Roma dal 1690 (quando papa Alessandro VIII ne condannò la dottrina), dal 1697 si dedicò alla carriera di professore a Padova. Il giurista senese Catarino Politi (al secolo Lancillotto Puliti), teologo domenicano nel Convento di San Marco a Firenze, ove ancora forte era l'influenza di Savonarola, pubblicò ivi nel 1520 la "Apologia pro veritate catholicæ et apostolicæ fldei ac doctrinæ, adversus impia ac pestifera Martini Lutheri dogmata", a cui Lutero subito rispose con la sua "Responsio ad librum eximii magistri nostri, magistri Ambrosii Catharinii, defensoris Silvestri Prieratis", ribadendo il rifiuto di dialogo con il papato; Politi è quindi uno dei primi a scrivere contro la Riforma protestante.
