Descripción: Geo. M. Smith & Company, 1873. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. 1st Edition. Geo. M. Smith & Company 1873 First Edition, First Printing. Beautiful book with the original end papers and a crisp binding. The true first printing of this book was printed by Osgood in 1873. However the Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing so the 1873 Geo Smith printing is considered the next true first edition (or some refer to as the second printing of the first edition of this book), printed by Geo. M. Smith & Company 1873. Fully illustrated with 110 illustrations, 303 pages. The book is in great condition with vibrant emerald green boards with gilt scenes and titles to the front and spine, and still has the scarce original brown coated end papers. Slight spotting to the rear board. The book has benefited from slight restoration with the spine rebacked, and presents extremely well. The book has no edgewear, and the binding is very tight and square, Unlike most copies of this title which have poor/cracked bindings and loose pages, this book is tightly bound and is quite readable and not fragile. All pages are present and are overall very clean with but the last 25 pages have a small faded water stain along the outer margin, not affecting the text. Otherwise the pages are overall quite clean for a Verne book with some scattered handling marks. The book has no foxing other than to the original tissue guard which affected the surrounding pages. Slight staining to the outer page block, not affecting internal pages. Please see many detailed images. Beautiful rare, important Verne book in collectible condition with the scarce original end papers. Perfect for a Verne collector, presenting well on the shelf with a nice crisp readable binding, and without the excessive wear, and broken bindings as is typically found with Verne books. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for other SciFi and Verne titles. Nº de ref. de la librería 001080

Descripción: 1873. [a handsome copy] or, The Marvellous and Exciting Adventures of Pierre Aronnax. Translated from the French. One Hundred and Ten Illustrations. (Edition of James R. Osgood & Co.) Sold Only by Subscription. Boston: Geo. M. Smith & Co., 1873. Original green cloth decorated in gilt and black. First American Edition, second and usual "Smith" issue, of Verne's famous tale of Captain Nemo and the submarine Nautilus. Considerable confusion surrounds the relationship of the two Boston 1873 title pages that can appear in this title -- the James R. Osgood & Company title page, and this usual Geo. M. Smith & Co. one (which refers to the Osgood one and indicates "sold by subscription only"). The bindings of the two are nearly identical (the Osgood binding reads ".UNDER THE SEA" and bears a jellyfish in the center of the front cover, whereas the Smith binding properly reads ".UNDER THE SEAS" and has Captain Nemo using a sextant on the front cover). Clearly the Osgood one is a bit earlier and is much scarcer: supposedly only about fifteen copies were known to exist, but we have handled more than a dozen of them over the past 20 years (all between $12,000 and $27,500), so our guess would be more like fifty. One theory is that the Osgood title page may have designated the subscription issue, and that the Smith one, being much less scarce, must have designated the subsequent trade issue. Another possibility is that most of the Osgood edition was consumed by a Boston fire.~This copy is a standard copy without gilt page edges (a deluxe feature for which the original buyer paid extra). On the final page of text, there is no "THE END" (some copies have it, some have it partially, and some do not have it at all; this is not an "issue point" as is sometimes claimed, but merely a case of type slippage during a single print run, with no bearing upon which copies were actually first to reach the public).~As for condition, this is a bright, nearly fine copy (a few tiny nicks in the spine ends); remarkably, the original dark brown endpapers of this hefty volume are still entirely intact.
