Limited-Edition (Number 172 of 1000). 40 pages of text. 24 tipped-in very well- produced color reproductions, half-page and full-page, excellent quality, and all in excellent condition. Delacroix, Corot, Daumier, Courbet, Manet, Degas, Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Ensor, Vuillard, Matisse, Leger, Rodin, and Maillol. Interior of the book is in excellent condition. Exceptionally clean pages. I'm not seeing any soiling or toning. Small, vague crease just below top corners; similarly small, vague, inconspicuous crease just above bottom corners. No turned-down corners or placeholder creases. No markings of any kind. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The maroon covers are also very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine and on the front are both quite bright, no wear. The cover edges are in very good shape. Same with the corners, no rubbing on either. The page edges are very clean. The only cover wear is a thin tear on both sides of the spine just off its top edge. You can see the green and white wrap-around decorative band (it wraps around each inside cover). The part that wraps around the rear inside cover has a light crease. I didn't see a reference to this band on any of the other books for sale. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. 'Hugo von Tschudi was an art historian and museum curator. He was director of the Nationalgalerie in Berlin beginning in 1896. He immediately set about the acquisition of modern French painting, securing In the Conservatory (Au jardin d'hiver) by Édouard Manet, and the first Paul Cézanne to enter any public collection anywhere the following year, 1897. Other works by Renoir, Monet, Pissarro and Degas joined them. However, Gauguin's controversial masterpiece The Birth of Christ would prove Tschudi's undoing. The contemporary work, mixing the sacred with the profane and the primitive, was not generally appreciated by most Europeans at the time. In particular, it was intensely disapproved of by Kaiser Wilhelm. In 1909 he at first loaned the painting to the institution but was promptly dismissed from his position by the Kaiser. Tschudi was given a new job as director of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, which he continued to manage until his death in 1911. He took the new Gauguin painting with him to Munich, where it remains in the permanent art collection there. Between 1909 and 1914 the so--called 'Tschudi Contributions' brought a remarkable collection of masterpieces of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism to the Bavarian State Collections in Munich. Tschudi, serving as the general director of the collections, acquired 44 paintings, nine sculptures and 22 drawings, mostly from emerging French artists. In Bavaria public funds could not be used to buy such works, but Tschudi's associates were able to find the money to complete the purchases with private contributions after his death in 1911.'.
