Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. This feast of Middle Eastern folklore from an award-winning Iraqi storyteller is paired with vibrant cut-paper art.The twenty fables and folktales in this illustrated storybook have taken a long journey. Many have roots that stretch across Europe, Asia, and Africa, but when award-winning writer and gatherer of tales Rodaan Al Galidi learned them in his homeland of Iraq, it was as Arabic folktales and as part of the Arabic storytelling tradition. When he migrated to the Netherlands, he shaped twenty of those tales into his debut book for children, which was translated to English by Laura Watkinson. Filled with wisdom about love and acceptance, and warnings against folly, these elegantly translated stories of donkeys and roosters, kings, sheikhs, and paupers are exquisitely illustrated by cut-paper artist Geertje Aalders. Beautifully packaged, Arabic Folktales is a rich and varied introduction to the world of Middle Eastern folklore. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover first edition - First printing. The author's first book, written for older children. The word 'serendipity' was invented by Horace Walpole after reading an old fairy tale, "The Three Princes of Serendip," This story, which goes back at least to the 16th century, is retold by Hodges in a version based on an English translation of 1722. "The tale is brilliantly embroidered, full of color and imagination. It tells how the three princes of Serendip (another name for Ceylon) journey to Persia and India to prove their fitness as future rulers and to find the secret formula which will clear the dragoninfested sea around their island kingdom. Along the way they meet mighty kings, young girls as beautiful as jasmine, fearsome monsters. . . this ends happily as a fairy tale should with the gentle corollary that vision and knowledge come to 'those who dream with lifted eyes'. (New York Times review). Illustrated with drawings by Joan Berg. Notes, and a brief list of suggestions for further reading. 158 pp. Very good+ in rust-colored cloth in a fair only dust jacket with some rubbing and edgewear, loss of about one inch at top of dj spine, price-clipped.
