About this Item: Geoffrey Bles 1950-1956, London, 1950. First editions of each book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. Octavo, 7 Volumes, illustrated by Pauline Baynes. The set comprises of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew, and The Last Battle. The Silver Chair is signed by C.S. Lewis on the half-title page. Each are in near fine with only light wear in their original dust jackets. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional set, rare and desirable signed. The Chronicles of Narnia is "unforgettable not only for the excitement and suspense of the adventures but also for the strong emotions they describe so well [and they are] further enriched by Lewis' skillful use of language" (Silvey, 406). "Each book has something new and different to offer and there is no weakening of either inspiration or interest" (Eyre, 132). It is interesting that Lewis' inspiration came from a dream: "At first I had very little idea how the story would go. But then suddenly Aslan came bounding into it. I think I had been having a good many dreams of lions about that time[O]nce he was there, he pulled the whole story together, and soon he pulled the six other Narnian stories in after him (On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature, 1980). Lewis was "concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction to re-imagine thestory in an exciting narrative context [The Narnia books are] intoxicating to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative of readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th-century author" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 370). About this Item: Geoffrey Bles, London, 1960. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine-. Later printing. Third Impression (dated on the final page, "reprinted 1960"). Small 8vo, 224pp, with illustrations by Pauline Baynes. Publisher's French blue cloth, the spine titled in silver, with illustrated end papers; in the correct third-impression pictorial dust jacket priced at 10s/6d. Near Fine, with a lightly faded spine (though the lettering is crisp and fresh) and spotting to top and fore-edges; in a just about Fine jacket with some foxing to the spine folds. The third title (of seven) in the Narnia series, in which Edmund and Lucy return to Narnia to sail with Prince Caspian to the end of the world in search of seven lords who were exiled from Narnia by Tirian. A key issue regarding the Chronicles involves the order in which they should be read. Originally the books were numbered in order of publication, and so had to be read in that order. From the mid-1970s onwards some voices began urging that they be renumbered, and read in the order in which events occur in the stories . . . These voices have won out, at least to the extent that the new, worldwide edition of the Chronicles issued in 1994 is arranged in that order." But most scholars advocate reading the series in order of publication. "To read one of the other books before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe sacrifices narrative strategies Lewis consciously or unconsciously built into it as the first book about Narnia, strategies he used to introduce readers gradually to the world of Narnia and to the mysterious character Aslan. Likewise, the fullest imaginative experiencing of The Magician's Nephew comes through reading it as a flashback, for that is the way Lewis thought of it as he wrote the book." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Nº de ref. del artículo: BB0676
