First edition, first printing. 250pp. Coral pink cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on the spine. 8vo. Cloth gently rounded at corners and spine ends, perhaps a tad faded. Text block edges dulled. Hint of spotting on endpapers else internally… neat, clean and tight. In its original dust wrapper, bumped at edges, small nick on lower leading corner, a little shelf worn. English author Williamson wrote this story in the early 1920s, while living in Florida, crafting much of its in the heat of a blistering sun beside the swamps and marshes. But he failed to find a publisher in the States, with rejections saying it was 'too far back in the time', there being no longer an interest in the post-war years, and 'too English' for an American audience. It was not published until 1945 by Faber & Faber.

Jacket has faults - namely a little patchy loss (mainly to head/tail of spine), patchy browning (including to spine), few tears, edge/shelf wear, rubbing, creasing and is generally a… little grubby and fragile. Boards are very good (having been well protected by the jacket) with a few marks, little wear (pushing/rubbing) to head/tail of spine and a little pushing/bumping to corners. The binding is tight and pages are generally clean. Pages are tanned. Top of pages little dusty. Previous owner's name and date in pen inside front board. Occasional small mark to some pages (nothing much). No other faults. A solid copy (albeit in a worn jacket). All books described honestly and accurately. Paypal accepted.
