Hardcover. Condición: Fair. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Jacket by Paul Bacon Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First published in 1975, this is a eighth impression of 1981. Ex library with usual stamps, dockets and defects. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some slight spotting to page fore edges, some yellowing to largely white jacket, especially to spine, corners slightly rubbed and bruised, some slight overall creasing and time staining. Not price clipped (£9.95), internally cleanish tight and square, overall in vg condition, scarce now even in this later edition. 803pp. The first book chronologically in James Clavell's Asian Saga and an immediate bestseller upon publication. Beginning in 1600 in feudal Japan, some months before the critical Battle of Sekigahara, it gives an account of the rise of the daimyo 'Toranaga' (based upon the actual Tokugawa Ieyasu) of the Shogunate, seen through the eyes of a shipwrecked English pilot, John Blackthorne, whose fictional heroics are loosely based on the true and eventful life of William Adams. Clavell (1924-94), was an Australian (later naturalized American) novelist, screenwriter, director and World War II veteran and prisoner of war. A heavy book, extra postage may be required.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. First printing of a novel that sold many millions of copies worldwide and did much to interest the West in Japan and Japanese history. Although complete and sound, this is a pretty shabby copy. The boards are worn and a little stained with damp damage to top edge of rear board, The yellow top stain is unevenly faded from the damp damage. The spine has become slightly concave. Edges of the textblock a little grubby. Internally clean and tight. The dust jacket is browned and worn to edges with short tears and chips and nicks to extremities. Crease down rear flap. But complete and unclipped. A decent reading copy of this first edition. JS.

A first edition, first printing published by Atheneum in 1975. A very good book with curving of the spine and some fading to the edges. In a very good unclipped wrapper with nicking and wear to the edges. Preceding the British first edition of the first chronological work in Clavell's epic Asian series. Octavo, original half cloth, cartographic endpapers. Dust wrapper design by Paul Bacon. A Small letter from Robert Silver Program Chairman for The EXPLORERS CLUB IN LA California in 75 (known as the elite explorers club) to and inscribed on the endpaper for Captain Adrian Small who later sailed to Japan for the 1980s SHOGUN series on the Golden Hind and was used as Erasmus in the series. He was also sailed on the replica Mayflower 2 from 1957 when Alan Villiers was captain. A lovely association.

A first edition, first printing published by Hodder in Stoughton in 1975. A near fine book without inscriptions. In a very good (or better) clipped wrapper with fading to titles on spine. Dust wrapper design by Paul Bacon. "Shogun" is a historical novel by James Clavell set in 17th-century Japan. It follows the adventures of John Blackthorne, an English navigator shipwrecked on Japan's shores. As he becomes embroiled in the country's political intrigues and cultural clashes, he forms alliances with samurai and falls in love with a Japanese noblewoman. The novel delves into themes of honour, loyalty, and cultural exchange as Blackthorne navigates the complex world of feudal Japan, ultimately becoming entangled in the power struggles of warlords and the quest for a new Shogun. "Shogun" is a sweeping tale of East meeting West, offering insight into Japan's isolationist history.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First Edition. The first book in Clavell's Asia Saga, a series of novels set in feudal Japan, and a worldwide bestseller that remains popular in the US as it approaches its 50th anniversary. The book was turned into a hugely popular TV miniseries in 1980. This was Clavell's first big book (both commercially and physically), and while it likely had a relatively large print run, the 802-page bulk and the popularity of the novel make nice first editions uncommon. First edition (stated). A nice copy with light bumping to the spine ends in a lightly bumped dust jacket. The red lettering on the spine is slightly faded and there are a couple of very short tears on the jacket edges. The heavy page block has sagged a bit, causing convexity to the upper spine and the top edge of the boards are lightly sunstruck. An above average, very good / very good copy, to be sure. This copy is one of those inscribed by Clavell on his Shogun book tour on the title page: "This is for Beni H-a lady of quality also. New York, July 10, 1975. Best, James C." (Clavell usually signed with just the first initial of his last name; the book was officially published on June 22, 1975, making this among the first copies Clavell signed).
