Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. First Edition. The first book in Clavell's Asia Saga, a series of novels set in feudal Japan, and a worldwide bestseller that remains popular in the US as it approaches its 50th anniversary. The book was turned into a hugely popular TV miniseries in 1980. This was Clavell's first big book (both commercially and physically), and while it likely had a relatively large print run, the 802-page bulk and the popularity of the novel make nice first editions uncommon. First edition (stated). A nice copy with light bumping to the spine ends in a lightly bumped dust jacket. The red lettering on the spine is slightly faded and there are a couple of very short tears on the jacket edges. The heavy page block has sagged a bit, causing convexity to the upper spine and the top edge of the boards are lightly sunstruck. An above average, very good / very good copy, to be sure. This copy is one of those inscribed by Clavell on his Shogun book tour on the title page: "This is for Beni H-a lady of quality also. New York, July 10, 1975. Best, James C." (Clavell usually signed with just the first initial of his last name; the book was officially published on June 22, 1975, making this among the first copies Clavell signed).

First edition of the first chronological work in Clavellâ s epic Asian series. Octavo, original half cloth, cartographic endpapers. Presentation copy, lengthily inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the half-title page, "[Shogun] Be me--- (James C) for Jahan and Milly who made an hour pass so nicely. Thank you for your liking my work Best James C New York July 13th 1975." Very good in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. "It's almost impossible not to continue to read Shogun once having opened it,' wrote Webster Schott in The New York Times Book Review. 'Yet it's not only something that you readâ "you live itâ ¦ Shogun, set in Japan in the year 1600, follows the adventures of the fictional John Blackthorne, whom the novel presents as the first Englishman to reach Japanâ ¦ In 1980 Shogun was made into a five-part television mini-series that starred Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune and was seen by 120 million viewers, the largest audience for a mini-series since Roots" (New York Times). Although Shogun is the first volume in Clavell's Asian series, it was published after the novels King Rat (1962) and Tai-Pan (1966). The series also includes the novels Noble House (1981), Whirlwind (1986) and Gai-Jin (1993).

First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the first blank, "For Judy Hensley, James C. Remember "wa", July 1975 Dallas, with thanks from me. x." Shogun, the third novel in Clavell's Asian Saga, is rarely found inscribed. In his inscription, Clavell has written the Japanese kanji "wa" ("spiritual tranquility"), an idea at the centre of this novel's portrayal of 17th-century Japanese society. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed blue boards, spine and front cover lettered in black, orange map endpapers, top edge yellow. With dust jacket. Board edges slightly faded, internally clean and bright. A fine copy in the near-fine dust jacket with a few creases and slight toning to spine and flaps.

A first edition, first printing published by Hodder in Stoughton in 1975. A very good book with inscribee's neat name to the front endpaper - Binding still very good. Foxing on preliminary pages, scattered foxing in book. Edges foxed and browned. In a very good (or better) unclipped wrapper without fading to titles on spine - with some edgewear. Dust wrapper design by Paul Bacon. Inscribed on the title page: 'For Jacques Horringa/-Book man!/Best wishes from/me/James C/Sydney 27th Nov 75/'. The inscription is accompanied by a Japanese symbol. "Shogun" is a historical novel by James Clavell set in 17th-century Japan. It follows the adventures of John Blackthorne, an English navigator shipwrecked on Japan's shores. As he becomes embroiled in the country's political intrigues and cultural clashes, he forms alliances with samurai and falls in love with a Japanese noblewoman. The novel delves into themes of honour, loyalty, and cultural exchange as Blackthorne navigates the complex world of feudal Japan, ultimately becoming entangled in the power struggles of warlords and the quest for a new Shogun. "Shogun" is a sweeping tale of East meeting West, offering insight into Japan's isolationist history. Inscribed copies of this, the first UK Edition, are scarce indeed.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. James Clavell (1975) Shogun , UK first edition, first printing, published by Hodder and Stoughton. Signed and inscribed by Clavell to the actor Leon Lissek on the first and second half title pages: This is to Us | part of my family the best | part among many best parts. | (They, Heather & Leon, are | exceptionals oh very | yes! From ME with KOI [ meaning with love or affection in Japanese] James | Mallorca, Nov 13th 75″ On the second half-title another inscription: Stolen from the LISSEK LIBRARY | HON [Clavell probably means the Japanese kanji Hon for book] is the key to SHOGUN [Shogun in Japanese kanji] A great inscription in the year of publication to Australian-born British actor Leon Lissek (1939 2022) who played Father Sebastio in the famous 1980 TV-mini series adaptation of this very novel. Lissek would also play Christian Toxe in another Clavell adaptation of Noble House (1988). A wonderful association copy with an amazing inscription. The book is housed in a full white leather custom made solander box which shows the silhouette of a samurai in front of the red rising sun as found in Japanese flags. The spine of the solander shows the title. Line in black velvet to protect the book perfectly. Condition: the book is very good with usual light wear to the boards. The page block shows some ageing (toning) to the paper stock as well as foxing which has not penetrated the internal pages as they remain clean. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and in nice condition. This is a very scarce signed first edition association copy of perhaps Clavell s best novel published in 1975. During WW II Clavell was a POW of the Japanese. Instead of resigning to his fate he treated the time of captivity as his university where he learned many skills including the art of survival which he later turned into his debut novel King Rat (1962), and ignited his interest in Asia and its vast culture including the culture of the Japanese, his tormentors. Shogun, Clavell s third novel, is the the first chronologically in the Asian Saga. Clavell skillfully blends historical fact with fiction and creates a suspensful pageturner with all ingredients the reader could wish for: action, a love story, suspense, and a history lesson blended in the most entertaining way. He also brings the Japanese culture closer to the Western mind a masterful achievement. In 1980 Shogun was made into a five-part television mini-series that starred Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune and was seen by over 120 million viewers; at the time the largest audience for a mini-series since Roots according to New York Times. The story has recently been adapted for a second time as a ten-episode mini-series for the American pay-TV network FX. James Clavell is also remembered in Hollywood as a screenplay writer of his own work and others, e.g. The Fly (1958); The Great Escape (1963). First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).
