Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Limited Edition. Condition: (see pics.) Pocket sized version of the book and deceptively light being over 323 pages thick. Printing is quite tiny but legible. Bottle green leatherette cloth rubbed at corners and some old signs of repair such as a dark line where a piece of sellotape used to be. Further repair to the spine at back board junction. However the book is intact. Previously well-loved and thumbed through. Still, a very good, clean and tight copy. Unknown date of printing but from the transcript at the back, the edition is the first book of a series of "Routledges Cabinet Edition" so assume late 1800's. Synopsis: Sir Walter Scott is best known nowadays as the author of The Waverley Novels, but his first love and earliest success was as a poet. Indeed, it is no understatement to say that he was the best-read, best-reviewed and best-paid poet of the Romantic period: Byron himself placed Scott at the summit of his contemporary Parnassus.Poems include: The Lady of the Lake, The Lay of the Last Minstrel, The Vision of Don roderick and others. There is a section on "Contributions to Border Minstrelsy" and "Translations and imitations of German Ballads".

By profession Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator. He was a long term president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Since his youth Scott was fascinated by oral tradition. He developed an innovative method of recording what he heard from local story-tellers In 1796, Scott's friend James Ballantyne founded a printing press in Kelso, in the Scottish Borders. Through Ballantyne, Scott was able to publish his first works, including "Glenfinlas" and "The Eve of St. John", and his poetry then began to bring him to public attention. In 1805, The Lay of the Last Minstrel captured wide public imagination, and his career as a writer was established in spectacular fashion. Ref ZZ4 Size: 636pp.
