France was a Colorado attorney and nature writer, who wrote under the pseudonym "Bourgeois". Includes accounts of fishing on Grand Lake and Grand River. Illustrated with with vignettes and frontis map by E.H. Kellogg. It is the… first book that dealt exclusively with trout fishing in the Rocky Mountains. This copy signed in 1886 on front endpaper by George N. (Newton) Billings of Delphos, Kansas. Billings was an avid angler, who enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War when he became of age to do so. He served through the remainder of the war, first in Company C of the Eighth New York Heavy Artillery, whose tremendous losses earned it the name of the "Bloody Eighth", and at the last of the war, in the Tenth New York veteran volunteers. At the time of his discharge, he was a sergeant in the latter corps. After the war he homesteaded a small farm near Delphos, Kansas, and later became a partner in the Bank of Delphos. Hence, a sought after Colorado angling title, with a scarce civil war signature. Signed by Significant Other.
