Overall good condition. Old stamp of the War Department on nthe title page, partially covered by a later stamp which states Library Of Congress Surplus Duplicate. Pages show some minor soiling on a few pages. Calhoun's signature is partially cut off, presumably when the pamphlet was trimmed for binding at some point. A scarce item. American Imprints #27233, locating only three copies and WorldCat locating six. A very scarce work dealing with the cost of building the proposed National Road over the Allegheny Mountains. SIGNED BY JOHN C. CALHOUN. Calhoun was one of the most prominent Southern politicians of his era, ranked alongside Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. In 1812, he was one of the leaders of the US House of Representative where he played a key roile in America's entry in to the War of 1812. He would later serve as Secretary of War under James Monroe and as Vice-President under both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson. He later served as Secretary of State under John Tyler along with multiple terms as US Senator from South Carolina. He died in 1850 and is considered as one of the great senators in American history.
