The infamous 1936 film Reefer Madness was funded by a church group and made in earnest as anti-marijuana propaganda depicting the extreme perils of drug abuse. In the 1972 the film was rediscovered and shown as satire to throngs of stoned audiences who found all of the messages comically absurd. Underground film maker Jack Smith wrote an appreciation for The Village Voice in which he stated that "it is a beautiful film, and everyone in the arts should see it." There are subsequently a lot of variant posters that were made in the '70s to promote midnight screenings of the film however this may well be the most racy of them all.
