Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. Raoul Dufy: text by Alfred Werner; Harry N. Abrams, Inc., publishers, New York, 1987. Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) once said every night I go to bed happy and exhausted, telling myself that I have worked to the limit of my resources and can die peacefully. Gertude Stein captured the essence of his art when she proclaimed Dufy is pleasure! Pleasure, happiness, joy, beauty these are the words that come naturally to people when the subject is Dufy. Long the odd man out in modern French painting, precisely because of his optimistic and uncritical view of life, Dufy is an artist whose star is on the rise again. For, as this book makes clear, he was a great painter whose sensuous delight in life is rooted in a tradition that goes back to Watteau and Fragonard. Like many French painters of his day, Dufy in his early career orbited the great luminaries: Degas, Monet, Matisse, Cézanne. By the time he reached forty, he had evolved a style that was unmistakably his own, as he recorded the fashionable world around him of horse races and yachting scenes, sparkling views of the Riveria, chic parties and musical events. Alfred Werner describes the elements of Dufy s style: the seductiveness of the light, swift brushstrokes, the atmosphere of perfect calm arising from the complete harmony of the predominant colors; the decorative beauty of the dream-like patterns, often reminiscent of the Orient. So distinct was Dufy s mark on the visual arts that the word Dufyesque is often used to describe the style of work that is gay, light-hearted, and decorative. Alfred Werner brings Dufy to life, sketching his youth and apprenticeship in the arts; his years as a textile designer and art director, first for the French couturier Paul Poiret, and then for a silk firm in Lyons; and his years of triumph as an artist second only to Matisse in his power to evoke a perfect world of balance, purity, and serenity. Forty colorplates, with commentaries by Dr. Werner, reveal that the values embodied in Dufy s delightful paintings of the passing scene are deep and enduring. This large book is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. This large volume may require additional postage. There are 98 illustrations, including 40 plates in full color.…
