Soft cover. Condición: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Pogo Papers by Walt Kelly (1953 Vintage Trade Paperback) Classic comic strip in book form - the fourth in the series which contains comic strips originally published in newspapers 1952 & 1953. The copy for sale is the first edition of this paperback title, but is from the 4th printing published by Simon & Schuster. This is known because of the stated "Fourth Printing" on reverse of title page along with "ONE DOLLAR" printed price at the end of the foreword. The book consists of a cartoon spoof of the Simon & Schuster colophon on the title page, a poem by the turtle troubadour, table of contents, 5 topical B&W comic strip "books" or themed groupings, ending with "About and Around the Author" 196 pp. ( May as well count both sides of the covers as they are part of the presentation.) Walter Crawford Kelly, Jr. (1913-1973) was named Cartoonist of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society in 1952. Pogo remains one of the world's most popular comic strips. This is a collection of comic strips by the immortal Walt Kelly featuring characters that lived in the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia. Often a vehicle for political commentary, Kelly made famous the revised Commodore Perry quote "We have met the enemy, and he is s." Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. trade paperback 192 pp. The spine has split at the top but there is no crease. The cover has some light soiling and a fold at the bottom left-hand corner at the back. Strangely, there is a word covered with glossy black tape at the end of the Foreword for some reason. Several pages have been coloured in by a previous owner. For a book more than 70 years old, it is in very good shape. A good reading copy. This was one of the most popular newspaper comic strips from 1949 to the mid 1970s. The title character of Pogo is an opossum living with other anthropomorphic animals in the Okefenokee swamp somewhere in the southeastern US. The strip was satirical, and Kelly used puns and verbal humor to carry stories lampooning current political figures and satirizing society in general. In its heyday it was the most popular strip of the period. The strip was revived from 1989 to 1993 but was nowhere near as successful as the original. Despite valiant efforts, the writers could not pull off what Kelly did. In this classic book, Kelly tackles the usual suspects of the US government, local politics and society by parodying Mother Goose and children's songs. Walt Kelly (ilustrador).…

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 192 pages with comic illustrations. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4") bound in original pictorial wrappers. First edition. Walter Crawford Kelly Jr or Walt Kelly, was an American animator and cartoonist, best known for the comic strip Pogo. He began his animation career in 1936 at Walt Disney Studios, contributing to Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Dumbo. Kelly resigned in 1941 at the age of 28 to work at Dell Comics, where he created Pogo, which eventually became his platform for political and philosophical commentary. The Pogo comic strip was syndicated to newspapers for 26 years. The individual strips were collected into at least 20 books edited by Kelly. He received the Reuben Award for the series in 1951. The principal characters were Pogo the Possum, Albert the Alligator, Churchy LaFemme, a turtle, Howland Owl, Beauregard (Houndog), Porkypine, and Miz Mamzelle Hepzibah, a French skunk. Kelly used the strip in part as a vehicle for his liberal and humanistic political and social views and satirized, among other things, Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-Communist demagogy (in the form of a shotgun-wielding bobcat named "Simple J. Malarkey") and the sectarian and dogmatic behavior of Communists in the form of two comically doctrinaire cowbirds. Condition: Corners rubbed, light edge wear, back head corner creased else very good.…
