I have employed another method: an exhaustive study of an especially prominent region within the particular nation. I have endeavored to analyze thoroughly the opinions held by contemporary Virginians concerning the "Little Corsican." . Purposes of clarity necessitated, for the most part, an analytical division of the attitudes into three natural segments: opinion of French domestic developments, and of Franco-European and Franco-American relations. Since Napoleon Bonaparte was a product of the French Revolution, I have included an analysis of the attitudes toward the revolution, with emphasis on the later pahse.
