Set in 1863 Scotland, narrated by innocent, but sharp 15 year-old Bessy Buckley of Glasgow, now a maid at Castle Haivers near Edinburgh. Her mistress Arabella, has her record her thoughts & experiences in a journal. Flattered, feeling favoured, Bessy does so.
