Her mistress Arabella, has her record her thoughts & experiences in a journal. Flattered, feeling favoured, Bessy does so. Drama sets in when Bessy discovers Arabella is in the process of writing a book on The Observations, a study of the "habits and nature of the Domestic Class", of which, Bessy is clearly but one of the subjects. 405 pgs, 24 chapter in 6 parts. Bessy is incensed to read criticisms of herself in the account, and also learns of Arabella's affection for one of her predecessors, a girl who died under mysterious circumstances.
