Descripción: Lausanne, Albert Skira & Cie., 1932, 1932. Brossura editoriale. Estado de conservación: Ottime. prima edizione. Loose as issued in original printed wrappers with glassine; calf-backed board chemise and calf-edged slipcase. Custom quarter morocco clamshell case. 153 numbered pages, 29 original etchings in black, 23 of which in full page on Arches paper. Book is signed by Henry Matisse, numbered and stunningly enriched by an original black ink drawing by Matisse himself on the half title double sheet, signed and dedicated on lower left corner "à Max Pellequer. 13/342 Henri Matisse" (usually the drawing accompanies only the first 5 numbered specimens in this edition). First artist book by Matisse, this is one of the 90 copies printed on Arches paper on a total circulation of 145, including 20 "Hors-Commerce". "Matisse's etchings for the Mallarme's Poésies (1932) with no doubt are the culprit in the luxurious tradition of illustrated books. Inspired by Mallarmé's idea that the empty page is a primary space, the artist showed exceptional balance and harmony by putting in contrast the levity of the trait and the weight of the printed text" (Andel p. 346). This work is the best possible summary for the interpretative female nude study the artist started in the early years of the 1900. Matisse focused his entire artistic research on the human figure analysis and disrupted the traditional approach in arts. His style evolved towards an emphasis on the contour lines and the shape of feminine bodies alone, marking a crucial turning point in contemporary art. This specimen is further enriched by the original black ink drawing representing a torso of a woman with her head resting on her right forearm. The dedication is to Max Pellenquer, nephew of the businessman André Level and Picasso's backer. The book is in perfect conditions. 0. autografato dall'illustratore. Nº de ref. de la librería 1533

Descripción: New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1935., 1935. Quarto. Cloth, decorated in gilt and blind. Illustrated with six original etchings, accompanied by reproductions of the preliminary sketches. Trace of slight darkening along endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine, bright copy, without foxing to the etchings, in somewhat darkened slipcase with bruises at tips, and cracks and splits at joints. Modern half morocco and cloth folding clamshell case. First American printing of the corrected Odyssey Press text. From an edition of 1500 numbered copies, signed by Matisse, this is one of only 250 copies signed as well by Joyce. A textually significant edition, whatever the shortcomings of its design (by George Macy) and the inappropriateness of the illustrations (Matisse illustrated Homer rather than Joyce, a factor allegedly contributing to Joyce's reluctance to sign the entire edition). "One of the very few American livres de peintres issued before World War II. According to George Macy, who undertook this only American publication of Matisse's illustrations, he asked the artist how many etchings the latter could provide for five thousand dollars. The artist chose to take six subjects from Homer's Odyssey. The preparatory drawings reproduced with the soft-ground etchings (Matisse's only use of this medium) record the evolution of the figures from vigorous sketches to closely knit, if less spontaneous, compositions" - Artist & The Book.

AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY: Max Weber's copy, with his ownership signature on the front free endpaper. Max Weber, the great Russian-American Cubist painter, studied under Matisse in Paris. Matisse "interested him especially. So much so that? he helped to form with the Bavarian Hans Purrmann a small class to study under Matisse." Matisse's teaching and work would heavily influence the young Weber: "No American prior to 1913 had so effectively absorbed the insights of Picasso and Matisse." (Max Weber, Retrospective Exhibition; Scott and Rutkoff, New York Modern.) Additionally signed on the limitation page by Matisse's son, the art dealer Pierre Matisse. With 50 full-page plates of Matisse's drawings of women, in addition to the frontispiece etching of Matisse's daughter ("Mlle. M.M") on chine collé and signed in ink by Matisse below the image. Soft cover. Estado de conservación: Fine. Limited Edition. This is Matisse’s last book and the one over which he had the most control. The idea of illustrating the poems of Charles d’Orléans, a fifteenth century French exile in England, came from Matisse himself in 1943, and it was executed after the war with his long-time collaborator and publisher Tériade. In this work Matisse has made not only the illustrations but has also written out the text by hand and enclosed it in his own cartouches. The subject matter of the poems is courtly love and separation, and it’s not unlikely that the object of d’Orléans’ longing was France herself. D’Orléans was taken prisoner after the French defeat at Agincourt and he was held more or less as a prisoner of war for twenty-five years. His royal connections as the grandson of Charles V and the nephew of Charles VI are shown by Matisse with the many hand-drawn fleurs de lis that appear throughout the book. The poetry of Charles d’Orléans has attracted the attention of other artists and fine press publishers. Raoul Dufy illustrated an edition of Poésies de Charles d’Orléans for Mermod in Lausanne in 1958 and Jean Frélaut illustrated an edition entitled Ballades, Rondeaux et Complaintes by Lacourière of Paris in 1949. This edition by Tériade is limited to 1200 copies plus thirty copies hors commerce. The frontispiece lithograph is signed and numbered by Matisse in the stone, and the edition as a whole is signed by Matisse with pencil on the justification page. It contains approximately one hundred color lithographs including fifty-four original illustrations. Enclosed in the original slipcase which is also in fine condition. Signed by Illustrator(s). Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition, Limited Edition.   Fry, Roger.  HENRI-MATISSE, the first edition (New York sub-issue) of [1930] published in Paris and New York by Editions des Chroniques du Jour and E. Weyhe, green wrappers with sketch of Matisse on cover in overall near VG condition with loss to spine paper and binding generally loosened but some strings holding, and  with original glassine over-wrapper over top wrapper folded in the French manner, PRINTED IN PARIS IN A LIMITED EDITION OF 650 copies, this being #511, Laing A11(b), 50 pp. numbered text with illustrations blended in, plus 40 plates at rear with list of illustrations at end;  FOUR  full page color plates (with tissue guards) in text portion, this is the French/American issue of the first edition  where only 650 total copies were distributed of which 150 went to London (Zwemmer on the cover), and, according to the text, 400 were sent to America with E. Weyhe on the cover as joint publisher, with the remaining 100 staying in Paris; contents generally clean with lightest toning at some page edges; with the original  publisher’s light green portfolio with a copy of the wrapper cover  (with the Matisse portrait) pasted to top cover of portfolio and “Henri Matisse" printed on dark green spine of portfolio, with original string ties (three); portfolio is near VG with light edge toning and tiny chips to pastedown edges but no fade to spine which is complete and very sharp; This book was printed in Paris; with all plates including the colored plates called for; please note that the later 1935 second Edition by Zwemmer is a much smaller book with almost totally different plates and illustrations; we have handled but one complete first edition in 30 years;  the illustrations in this first edition are much more EROTIC than the second 1935 edition,  such that the second edition effectively becomes an expurgated edition intended for more general distribution;  this first edition reflects Fry's fascination with Matisse's bold treatment if the female nude figure and discusses his use of form and color; his crediting Matisse with great ability to develop his talents is somewhat prophetic in view of Matisse's later reinvention and journey into the world of Cut-outs so recently the subject of major exhibitions at the Royal Academy and lately at Boston's MFA. Thought to be the first substantial work in English devoted to Matisse. RARE.   A note on the New York publisher: in 1919 Erhard Weyhe established the Weyhe Gallery on Lexington Avenue in New York City specializing in prints. A Bookstore was opened at the same location. Anton Zwemmer in London who established the premier foreign art bookstore in the U.K. had several business dealings with Weyhe. Zwemmer was a leading art book publisher and was the apparent driving force behind the joint Paris-U.K.-USA publication with G. di San Lazzaro of Editions des Chroniques du Jour of the twin monographs on Matisse and Picasso both issued in matching portfolio arrangements. The Matisse at 650 copies was a success as also the Picasso a year later at 1250 copies. Nº de ref. de la librería 9888

Descripción: Teriade Editeur, Paris, 1950. paperback. Estado de conservación: near fine. Matisse, Henri Ilustrador. Limited. This fabulous book, one of the most spontaneous and joyous of all Matisse's printed works, is illustrated with over 100 finely lithographed color pages, including 54 original works, done with colored pencils and crayons. The frontispiece portrait of the medieval author is signed and numbered in the plate. Printed entirely on heavy Velin d'Arches by Mourlot. Folio. Loose pages, as issued, in a lithographed glassine-covered folder. Paris: Teriade Editeur, (1950). First edition. A clean near fine copy, lacking the original slipcase. Despite the rather large limitation, copies of this book are increasingly scarce. Number 194 of 1200 copies printed and signed in pencil by Matisse on the justification page."The poems of the fifteenth-century author were written out in the artist's hand and framed by his own borders, in the manner of an illuminated manuscript." -- The Artist & The Book, p. 202. "In no other of Matisse's books does one feel the same sense of the artist's pleasure in his work as he plays here in his subtle games with children's crayons." -- Alfred Barr in Matisse: His Art & His Public, p. 272-273, 560. ''In no other of Matisse's books does one feel the same sense of the artist's pleasure in his work as he plays here his subtle games with children's crayons'' (Barr, pages 272-273, 560).
