Three 4to. typescripts. ff. [1], 62 with corrections in pencil and ink dated July 1950 (one printed addition tipped in); ff. [1], 68, [1], incorporating the earlier corrections and with further corrections and formatting notes; and ff. [9], comprising only the poetical extracts by Apollinaire; also with a loose design for an initial, a typescript leaf of 'Calibrage' dated 4 September 1950, explaining the proposed printing details, a sample printed bifolium of the first four pages of the work (in a variant text); and a corrected typescript leaf of promotional blurb for Apollinaire's Ombre de mon Amour (1947); loose in two original annotated folders. [Offered with:]ROUVEYRE, André, and Henri MATISSE. Apollinaire. Paris, Raisons d'Etre, 1952 [1953].Folio, pp. 86, [10], with two initial and two terminal blanks, a half-title, and a frontispiece, six lithograph plates, one lithograph tailpiece, and three linocut initials after designs by Matisse; bound preserving the original wrappers (also designed by Matisse) in black crushed morocco by Alix, panelled in yellow calf, matching slipcase. The original corrected typescripts of André Rouveyre's Apollinaire (1952), prepared in 1950 for submission to Louis Broder (though in the event Broder was not to publish the work); along with the first edition of the published text, #144 of 330 copies, illustrated by Matisse.Twenty-three years after Apollinaire's tragic early death in 1918, his mutual friends Rouveyre and Matisse, who had subsequently lost touch, crossed paths again and began an intense and rewarding friendship, exchanging some 1200 letters over the next decade or so, and collaborating on several publications including Rouveyre's novel Repli (1947). In September 1948, Rouveyre proposed a collaboration in tribute to their old friend Apollinaire, with text by Rouveyre to accompany six of Matisse's lithograph portraits of the poet. By early 1950 they had fixed on Louis Broder as the publisher and were discussing with him choices of paper, exchanging proofs, and debating the title. The earlier of Rouveyre's typescripts here shows three sets of corrections, coded by colour, and dated 5, 13 and 14 July 1950. The alterations are both typographic and substantive, ranging from word subsitutions to the insertion of several lengthy passages. Corrections are denser towards the end of the text, and Rouveyre seems to have struggled in particular with the closing paragraphs several versions with very different content are provided then struck through, none which eventually appeared in print. The second typescript represents a firmer form of the text (though again the end differs from the work as printed), with scattered corrections and instructions as to the design of the text. Included loose is tracing paper sample of a decorative initial 'U' or 'V' in a similar style to those provided by Matisse. The 'Calibrage', which describes this second typescript as the 'manuscrit définitif', proposes the illustrations comprise three large initials in red, three large headpieces and three tailpieces, and the six lithos; the print run would be 280, plus 20 hors commerce. If Broder had issued the publication, it would have been one of his earliest he went on to become a major publisher of artist books, working with Braque, Picasso, Miro, Eluard, Claudel etc. But there were inscreasing delays and financial conflicts during the summer of 1950, and by the autumn, even as the text was being set by Coulouma, Matisse and Rouveyre abandoned Broder as the publisher. In May 1951 they signed a new contract with Adda Gérard of 'Raisons d'Être', and printing was largely completed in April 1952, but the final product, with its screen-printed covers by Matisse, did not see the light until the following January.See Matisse-Rouveyre: Correspondance (2001), passim. A rare glimpse into among the more important relationships between art collector and artist: Matisse and Barnes, whose collection is at the Barnes Museum in Philadelphia?Never before offered for sale; acquired from the recipient's heirsAlbert C. Barnes was an American chemist, businessman, art collector, writer, educator, and the founder of the Barnes Foundation. Barnes made a fortune as the developer of the antiseptic Argyrol, and subsequently amassed an impressive collection of more than 2,000 pieces of rare art. His extensive holdings include many European and American impressionist masterpieces and early modern art, including works by Cezanne, Matisse, Van Gogh, and Picasso. His collection of 181 Renoir paintings continues to be the largest number of the artist?s paintings gathered in one location.Barnes started the Barnes Foundation in 1922 as an educational institution, with strict limits to its use and very specific rules about its operations. Barnes was known for his ambition and his artistic sensibility, as well as his eccentricity. At the Foundation, he insisted that the art be displayed in a unique way, exhibiting the works by their formal and expressive similarities rather than using the traditional method of grouping items by the date they were created, the place of origin, the type of item, or its medium. In 1931, Dr. Barnes began work on "The Art of Henri-Matisse" whom he regarded as ?the foremost painter of the day.? Barnes first met Matisse in 1930 when the artist asked to visit the Foundation during a trip to the United States. During his visit, Dr. Barnes proposed that Matisse create a mural for the Main Gallery, which later would become The Dance mural.Henry Hart first met Dr. Barnes in the early 1920s while Hart was employed as a journalist for the Philadelphia Record. The two developed a close friendship, and maintained a personal relationship until Dr. Barnes's unexpected death. Henry Hart transitioned from journalism and became an editor at Scribner, where he published "The Art of Henri-Matisse." The book was released on January 13, 1933.In early January 1933, Hart sent Barnes an advanced copy of the book, which he shared with Matisse. At the time Barnes was in Nice with Matisse. Both Matisse and Barnes replied to Hart.Autograph note of Matisse and Barnes on the verso of a scenic Nice postcard, addressed to Hart at his Scribner's Office in New York City:"Nice, January 1933. Thanks for the advance copy of our book. It's fine, very attractive, Matisse is delighted with its appearance, especially the illustrations - but he will add his own comments, herewith. A.C.B."Matisse adds, "I congratulate you on your book. I find it well composed and the prints are excellent. Sincerely, H. Matisse?.Dr. Barnes, believed that art had the power to improve minds and transform lives. Over the course of his lifetime, along with "The Art of Henri-Matisse", he wrote several books about his theories of art aesthetics.Albert C Barnes books inscribed to his close friend, Henry Hart, who later published his only biography, "Dr. Barnes of Merion, an Appreciation":"The Art of Henri Matisse?: To Henry Hart, who, with kindness and patience, delivered this baby in the Scribner Maternity. Albert Barnes."Art and Education?: To Henry Hart, with mixed feelings, all good. Albert Barnes."The French Primitives and Their Forms?: To Henry Hart, in friendship and esteem. From Albert C Barnes April 2, 1931."The Art of Renoir?: To Henry Hart, with best wishes. Albert Barnes, Merion March 9, 1935."A unique grouping that pulls back the curtains and shows us Dr. Barnes as collector, author, educator, and friend, and his relationships with the greatest artists of his day.

Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 2000.

Manuscrito
Eminent French painter. Matisse ranks among the greatest artists of the 20th century. Scarce handwritten letter, entirely in Matisse's hand, 1 page, dated November 2, 1949, in French. At this time in his life Matisse said that all he could do was work, he dreaded the daily confrontation with form and color on the canvas and could not face it without the consoling human presence of the pretty young girls he paid to pose for him. "That's what keeps me there, surrounded by my fruit and flowers which I get to grips with little by little, almost without noticing . . . and then I wait for the thunderbolt that is bound to follow."The young women who posed for him all learned to live and work in the atmosphere of almost unbearable tension generated by Matisse's effort to express his emotions on canvas-an effort that drained all his strength. He felt the same tension as when asked to pose himself. Matisse writes: "Dear Friend, I am quite upset about having to write to you that I am too nervous to be able to pose. It is something that has always been painful for me. I have never been able to pose even for Marquet 50 years ago. Please believe, dear friend, in my regrets and in my best wishes. H. Matisse 2 nov 49 ". Matisse and Albert Marquet were among the foremost painters in the Fauvist movement. They met at and both attended the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, one of the most prestigious French Universities of art and design. Matisse and Marquet were roommates for a time and they influenced each other's work. Wonderful associations between the two luminaries with interesting insight in Matisse's private nature and the great painter's own nervousness at being the subject and posing. In Excellent Condition.

Dear Sir, please accept my high respect. Henri Matisse [P.S.] I am waiting for the list from Purrmann regarding the works you told me about.'' The first book Matisse illustrated was Les Jockeys Camouflés, featuring poems by Pierre Reverdy, published in Paris 1918 by A La Belle Edition [this work included reproductions of five drawings]. Matisse s second book Poésies, 1932, [an edition of the poems of Stéphane Mallarmé, commissioned by the publisher Albert Skira] did not appear for fourteen years, but when it did, it turned out to be a masterpiece, and the first of his four major contributions to the twentieth-century illustrated book. It has been acclaimed as one of the finest of all modern illustrated books. In 1935, Matisse accepted another commission, this time from the American publisher responsible for the Limited Editions Club, George Macy, for an edition of Ulysses by James Joyce. In reference to our letter, we believe that the publication Matisse is referring to is an art gallery exhibition of his works that Purrmann arranged and curetted in Berlin in 1920. Just a much above average, and rather early Matisse letter, on a topic that was to be central to his cannon of work. A fine addition to any collection of artist letters.
