One reason was that the company had recently taken over the celebrated printing works and reading-room of the Tergesteo, where citizens of the internationally-minded port could find no less than 147 newspapers from all over the world. The acquisition in Stuttgart of what at the time was one of the most modern and remarkable steel engraving presses to be found contributed to the decision in 1855 to begin issuing these illustrations to a periodical entitled Letture di Famiglia.
